India tells Pakistan to act on forced conversions

first_imgNew Delhi: With the latest case of a Hindu girl’s abduction and forced conversion to Islam coming to light in Pakistan, India on Sunday said that it has conveyed to Islamabad the strong condemnation of such incidents by the civil society and the people of India and has asked the neighbouring country to take “immediate remedial action”.The spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Raveesh Kumar, said in a tweet that the civil society and the people of India have strongly condemned the recent deplorable incidents of forced abduction, conversion and marriage of “two Sikh girls in Pakistan”. “We have reflected these strong concerns with Pakistan and have asked for immediate remedial action,” Kumar tweeted. The MEA response came even as protests were held outside the Pakistan High Commission here by a large gathering of Sikhs and others, demanding that Islamabad take action in the matter. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MLA from Delhi, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, who has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the Sikh girl’s forced abduction, conversion and marriage to a Muslim man in Nankana Sahib, Pakistan, said that he has learnt about another Hindu girl, Reno Kumari, from Rohri town in Sindh province of Pakistan, being abducted. “I have been given information about another Hindu girl who was kidnapped from Rohari city of Pakistan Reno kumari D/o Inderjeet Kumar from Rohari is missing from IBA Sukker. We are very concerned about the safety of Hindu and Sikh girls in Pakistan,” Sirsa tweeted tagging the Pakistan government. Sirsa said he has met Amit Shah and has apprised him of the abduction and forced conversion of a minor Sikh girl in Pakistan. “I have met @AmitShah Ji and apprised him about the abduction and forced conversion of a minor Sikh girl in Pakistan. I have urged him to take up this matter with @pid_gov & help in safe return of the girl. He has assured me of maximum efforts for the daughter from Nankana [email protected],” he posted on twitter. Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal also expressed shock over the incident. “Shocked to know after abduction & forced conversion of Sikh girl in Nankana Sahib, a Hindu girl has been forcibly converted to Islam in Pakistan. Urge External Affairs min @DrSJaishankar Aji to raise issue of ethnic cleansing of Sikhs & Hindus in Pak in UN Human Rights Council,” she tweeted. Earlier, a girl named Jagjit Kaur, daughter of a Sikh granthi from Nankana Sahib, was forcibly abducted and warned that unless she converted to Islam, her brother and father would be killed. She is now known as Ayesha and is married to a Muslim man. On Saturday, the girl’s family members denied that she has been returned to them, terming it as fake news. The girl’s family has appealed to Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa for justice, saying “they are prepared to go to lengths” to ensure her return. In a video doing the rounds on Twitter, the girl’s brother Dasvinder Singh said that a video claiming that his sister has been reunited with the family was fake. The MEA had earlier said that it has received a number of representations from various quarters of civil society and members of Sikh religious bodies about the incident in Pakistan. According to the FIR filed by the girl’s family, eight men had barged into their house in Nankana Sahib on August 28 and taken away Jagjit Kaur at gunpoint.last_img read more

Specifically, we’ve been looking for pitchers that replicate some of the success of Hall of Famer Goose Gossage, for whom the goose egg is named. The “firemen” of Gossage’s day didn’t care as much about recording saves. Instead, they pitched in as many high-leverage situations as they could get their hands on: for instance, in tied games, or in the seventh or eighth innings when the situation demanded it. Pitchers like these provided a lot more value to their teams than modern closers who are often used exclusively in save situations. (The goose egg credits pitchers for clutch, scoreless relief innings, whether or not they’re save situations.)From the standpoint of overall bullpen usage patterns, there have been signs of progress around baseball. Major-league teams are placing less emphasis on the save and instead using their best relief pitchers in smarter ways. But no individual pitchers have come close to replicating the workload and value of Gossage, who accumulated a record 82 goose eggs — in 141.2 innings pitched — in 1975. In fact, no pitcher has yet earned even 40 goose eggs so far this season. The major-league leaders are the Dodgers’ Kenley Jansen and the Brewers’ Corey Knebel, who each had 38 goose eggs through Thursday night. Seattle’s Edwin Diaz leads the American League with 33 goose eggs, having helped lead the Mariners to a 25-13 record in one-run games.Knebel has had an outstanding season by any measure, but it’s been a fairly conventional one. The Brewers have dabbled with using him in Gossage-like situations — he’s made seven multi-inning appearances, for instance — but haven’t done so all that consistently. The Dodgers have gone a little further down the goose-feathered road with Jansen, who has 12 multi-inning appearances. The team has also avoided using Jansen with leads of three runs or more, which are usually a waste of an elite reliever’s talents. (A three-run lead is a save situation but not a goose situation.) And Jansen has been remarkably efficient, having converted all 38 of his goose opportunities. Still, Jansen is on pace for only 70 innings — typical for a modern closer, but only about half as many as Gossage threw at his peak. And some pitchers who were handling heavier workloads earlier in the season have seen their teams let up on the gas pedal — or have gotten themselves hurt. An early goose-egg favorite, the Astros’ Chris Devenski, has settled into a more conventional usage pattern as the season has worn on instead of routinely pitching two or more innings at a time. The Indians’ Andrew Miller has been on the DL twice in the past month. So the opportunity to see a truly Gossage-like season won’t happen for at least one more year. In the meantime, you can find complete goose stats for all pitchers this year in the table below. Measles Found On Alaska Cruise Ship

first_imgSymptoms typically start to appear 8–12 days (range: 7–21 days) after exposure, with rash onset typically occurring around 14 days after exposure. Based on the 7–21 day incubation period for measles, the potential dates of symptom onset for exposed cruise ship passengers range from August 13 through August 27. On August 6, a teenager visiting with her parents from overseas boarded a cruise ship in Vancouver, B.C., that was bound for Alaska. Approximately one week prior to boarding the cruise ship, the patient began experiencing cold-like symptoms while travelling in Thailand, and four days prior to boarding she woke up with a rash (facial), red eyes, and feverishness. Measles is a highly infectious viral respiratory disease that spreads via the airborne route and through direct contact with respiratory secretions. Measles typically starts with a fever, runny nose, cough, and red eyes. The patient remained in medical isolation until August 8 when she was transported to PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center. The patient was discharged from the hospital on August 10. Later that day, the patient was confirmed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing to have been infected with the measles virus. The cruise ship passengers disembarked in Seward on the morning of August 13, and many will be travelling throughout Alaska for a period of time before returning home.center_img Within several hours of boarding the ship, the child was put in medical isolation due to persistence of symptoms and the concern for possible measles. Per the parents, the child had never received the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine. While the risk of secondary cases among these passengers is considered to be very low, it is important for healthcare providers to be aware of the possibility of secondary transmission, according to the Department of Health and Social Services.last_img read more
