Netflix is talking about a cheaper mobile-only subscription plan that the company has been testing in India for many months now.To recall, Netflix said back in March that it was testing a Rs 250 monthly subscription plan in India that will allow consumers to stream content only through mobile devices. This would allow Netflix to compete against other video streaming services in India like Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, ALT Balaji and Zee5, among others, that offer lower-priced subscription plans. In April, Netflix also began testing a Rs 65 weekly mobile-only subscription plan. It is unclear as of now whether the company will launch both Rs 250 and Rs 65 plans or just the former.”After several months of testing, we’ve decided to roll out a lower-priced mobile-screen plan in India to complement our existing plans,” Netflix said in its earnings report. We believe this plan, which will launch in Q3, will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay TV ARPU is low (below $5). We will continue to learn more after launch of this plan.”As of now, Netflix offers three monthly subscription plans in India starting from Rs 500 going up to Rs 800. These plans are higher compared to what the competition offers in the country. Hotstar, for example, offers Rs 299 monthly subscription plan and Rs 999 annual plan. Earlier this year, Hotstar also announced a Rs 365 per annum VIP subscription plan that offers access to some sports channels as well as Hindi entertainment channels. Meanwhile, Amazon India offers its Prime Video service bundled in a Prime membership package that is priced at Rs 999 in India.advertisementNetflix has been investing heavily in original content in India. The streaming service has created shows like Sacred Games, Leila and Delhi Crime that have received critical acclaim in the country.ALSO READ | Netflix testing cheaper Rs 250 per month plan for India, aims to grow user base in countryALSO READ | Netflix India begins testing Rs 65 mobile-only weekly plan alongside Rs 250 monthly packGet real-time alerts and all the news on your phone with the all-new India Today app. Download from Post your comment Do You Like This Story?
