Premier Darrell Dexter extended sincere condolences today, June 1, on the passing of former journalist and provincial politician Jane Purves. Ms. Purves lost her battle with cancer this morning. “I will always remember Jane as a strong, smart and fair woman who brought passion and professionalism to every task she took on,” said Premier Dexter. “She was well-known and well-liked across Nova Scotia because she could be counted on to call things as she saw them. I feel privileged to have known and worked with her during her time in politics. “My thoughts are with Jane’s family, friends and colleagues on this very difficult day.” Ms. Purves was first elected to the House of Assembly in 1999 as the Progressive Conservative MLA for Halifax Citadel. During her political career she served as both the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health. Prior to being elected, Ms. Purves spent eight years as managing editor of The Chronicle Herald newspaper. She also worked as editor of The Daily News, where she stayed for less than a year before taking over as chief of staff to former Premier John Hamm in October 2004. Ms. Purves regularly appeared as a commentator on provincial issues with the CBC, CTV and other media outlets providing a unique voice that will be greatly missed. In February, Ms. Purves was honoured with Her Majesty the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal.
