New Delhi: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday again rejected a plea by MPs to continue as the party chief, a month after he decided to give up the top post after the Lok Sabha election drubbing.According to party sources, Rahul Gandhi was requested by MPs like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari to remain as the party chief at the Congress Parliamentary Party (CPP) meeting in Parliament. “But Rahul Gandhi remained firm on stepping down,” a party source said. The CPP meeting was chaired by Sonia Gandhi. The National Students Union of India also staged a protest outside Rahul Gandhi’s residence here on Wednesday to persuade him to take back his offer of stepping down from the presidency. Hundreds of Youth Congress activists carried placards which read: “Nation needs you Rahul Gandhi” and “Without you we are nothing”. According to party leaders, NSUI leaders are set to meet Rahul Gandhi.

Colombo: Sri Lanka declared a nationwide curfew after suicide bombers carried out a string of well-planned deadly explosions, mostly in Colombo, on Easter Sunday leaving 192 dead and 470 injured in the island’s bloodiest day since the civil war ended a decade ago. Starting around 8.30 a.m. when the first blast ripped apart the St Anthony’s Shrine at Kochchikade here during Easter Mass, five more powerful explosions followed, hitting a total of three luxury hotels in Colombo and also St Sebastian’s Church in Negombo, 30 km from here, and the Zion Church in the eastern district of Batticaloa, 250 km east of Colombo. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss bank a/c details Just as authorities thought they had the situation under control, another blast went off in the afternoon near a restaurant close to the Dehiwala zoo in Colombo, killing two persons, and the Colombo neighbourhood of Dematogoda killing another three persons. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on phone with Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, called the terror attacks “cold-blooded and pre-planned” barbarism and offered all help from New Delhi. Also Read – Tourists to be allowed in J&K from Thursday No one claimed responsibility for the bloodbath but AFP reported that Sri Lankan Police chief Pujuth Jayasundara had issued a nationwide alert 10 days ago warning that suicide bombers planned to hit prominent Catholic churches. The Daily Mirror newspaper quoted the findings of initial investigations as saying that the first six major blasts were caused by Islamist suicide bombers and added that two of them had checked a day earlier into the Shangri-La Hotel, one of the three hotels targeted in Colombo. It said that the investigators who broke into Room No 616 “had recovered materials used by radical” Islamist extremists. The Mirror said it was not clear if the bombers were Sri Lankans or foreigners. Authorities said that 35 foreigners were among the dead but their nationalities were not clear. Besides Shangri-La, the other hotels hit were Cinnamon Grand, located near the official residence of the Prime Minister, and Kingsbury Hotel. A Sri Lankan journalist, V. Thanabalasingham, told IANS over telephone that a sense of panic had gripped Colombo, which had given up its overbearing security apparatus ever since the Tamil Tigers were crushed in May 2009, leading to a decade of peace. Photos and videos circulating on social media showed the roof of one church had been almost fully blown away in the blast. The floor was littered with a mixture of roof tiles, splintered wood and blood, media reports said. Many people could be seen covered in blood. Some helped those with more serious injuries. Ambulances, their sirens wailing, rushed the dead and seriously injured to hospitals — once a familiar sight in Colombo. Minister of Economic Reforms Harsha de Silva described the carnage. “Horrible scenes. I saw many body parts strewn all over,” he said. President Sirisena urged the public to be calm and cooperate with the authorities to conduct swift investigations into the blasts. “I am shocked and saddened by the situation.” The government had imposed indefinite curfew across the nation and has temporarily blocked Facebook and Instagram to curb the spread of fake news. AFP quoted the police warning as saying that a foreign intelligence agency had reported that the National Thowheeth Jama’ath (NTJ), a Muslim group blamed for attacks on Buddhist shrines, was planning to carry out suicide attacks against prominent churches as well as the Indian High Commission in Colombo. Although Christians form only around 7 per cent of the Sri Lanka’s mainly Buddhist population, they are found both in the majority Sinhalese and minority Tamil communities.
North American stock markets plummeted Friday after the U.S.-Sino trade war heated up with President Donald Trump angrily responding to China’s tariff retaliation.China kicked off a political firestorm by announcing tariff hikes on US$75 billion of U.S. products including some agricultural products, crude oil, and small aircraft in retaliation to U.S. tariffs. China will also boost import duties on U.S.-made autos and auto parts.Trump reacted by ordering U.S. companies to “immediately start looking for an alternative to China,” although it’s unclear what authority he has to make this happen.Markets plunged as investors digested the back-and-forth, said Philip Petursson, chief investment strategist at Manulife Investment Management.“As of today this trade war seems to have escalated and the uncertainty has escalated and the impact on the global economy, the downside risks we would argue, have accelerated as well,” he said in an interview. The S&P/TSX composite index closed down 215.88 points at 16,037.58. That’s 3.8 per cent below the record high reached in April but up 12 per cent so far this year.In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 623.34 points at 25,628.90, the third large fall in as many weeks. The S&P 500 index was down 75.84 points at 2,847.11, while the Nasdaq composite was down 239.62 points or three per cent at 7,751.77.Trump further responded after markets closed by saying the 25 per cent tariff on US$250 billion worth of Chinese imports will rise to 30 per cent on Oct. 1 and that 10 per cent tariffs on US$300 billion worth of goods would rise to 15 per cent on Sept. 1.Trump had previously delayed some tariffs until Dec. 15 in a reprieve to holiday shoppers buying electronics, apparel, and shoes.“So it would be difficult to deny that Americans are paying for the tariffs in that environment,” Petursson said in reference to Trump’s claims that China pays for tariffs instead of U.S. consumers through higher prices.Among the “shocking comments” from the president was his lashing out at China’s President Xi Jinping, and Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell for refusing to signal a large interest rate cut, said Petursson.“My only question is, who is our bigger enemy, Jay Powel (sic) or Chairman Xi?,” Trump wrote in one of several tweets he fired out.Markets were expected to focus Friday on signals from Powell about interest rates. In a speech Friday an annual policy conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Powell said: “we will act as appropriate to sustain the expansion.” That followed less dovish comments Thursday from two Fed presidents arguing against rate cuts.Together they suggest a lower probability for a 50 basis point cut in rates in September.“Certainly the message out of Powell and out of some of the others was that we could go another 25 but 50 is a little bit more of a challenge to justify,” Petursson said.“[But] I think given what has gone on today…I don’t think that we’ll get through September without a cut.”The Canadian dollar traded for an average of 75.13 cents US, compared with 75.23 cents US on Thursday.Ten of the 11 major sectors of the TSX closed lower. Materials were the exception, rising 1.8 per cent as investors sought safety in gold. That helped Yamana Gold Inc. and Kinross Gold Corp., which gained 10 and 7.7 per cent respectively. The December gold contract was up US$29.10 at US$1,537.60 an ounce and the September copper contract was down 2.75 cents at US$2.53 a pound.Energy lost more than three per cent with several producers losing big on a drop in oil prices, including Encana Corp. and Canadian Natural Resources. The October crude contract was down US$1.18 at US$54.17 per barrel and the October natural gas contract was down 0.7 of a cent at US$2.16 per mmBTU.Industrials also fell as shares of Bombardier Inc. lost 8.1 per cent and Cargojet Inc. rose 12.9 per cent on a deal with Amazon.
In a report on the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), which was released today at UN Headquarters in New York, the Secretary-General notes that while the situation in the Israel-Syria sector has been “generally quiet,” conditions in the Middle East remain potential dangerous pending a comprehensive settlement. “I hope that determined efforts will be made by all concerned to tackle the problem in all its aspects, with a view to arriving at a just and durable peace settlement, as called for by the Security Council in its resolution 338 (1973),” he writes, referring to a milestone text which embodies the principle of ‘land for peace.’ Calling UNDOF’s continued presence in the area “essential” given the prevailing circumstances, the Secretary-General recommends that the Force’s mandate be extended through 31 May 2002.In making this recommendation, Mr. Annan calls attention to the severe funding shortfall facing the peacekeeping mission, which was established in 1974 following the agreed disengagement of Israeli and Syrian forces on the Golan Heights. Noting that UNDOF is owed some $19.6 million in unpaid dues, the Secretary-General appeals to all Member States “to pay their assessments promptly and in full and to clear all remaining arrears.”
President Donald Trump (Business Insider)(Business Insider) President Donald Trump wants to abolish the “Alternative Minimum Tax” (AMT) that, according to a copy of his federal tax return, cost him $31 million in 2005.That $31 million was a majority of all the $38.5 million in taxes he paid on his $153 million in total income for that year. The White House confirmed part of the president’s 2005 tax returns ahead of a report from MSNBC host Rachel Maddow.Trump said he wanted to abolish the AMT in 2016 when he was on the campaign trail:“All … Americans will get a simpler tax code with four brackets – 0%, 10%, 20% and 25% – instead of the current seven. This new tax code eliminates the marriage penalty and the Alternative Minimum Tax while providing the lowest tax rate since before World War II.”If the AMT didn’t exist, Trump would have paid only a fraction of his 2005 bill. Trump’s return shows that alongside the AMT adjustment the other taxes he paid total only about $7 million, or 4.5% of his $153 million in total income. As it is, Trump paid an effective tax rate of about 25% on his income. Here is a basic summary of Trump’s income and tax data:Total income: $153 millionWritedown on losses: -$103 millionIncome after writedown: $50 millionAMT: -$31 million (20% rate)Regular income tax: -$5.3 million (4.5%)Other taxes: -$1.9 million (1%)Total taxes Trump paid in 2005: -$38.5 million (25%)Total taxes Trump would have paid absent the AMT: $7 million*Numbers may not add due to rounding and various tax provisionsUnder Trump’s proposal, he would have paid about 5.5% in tax rather than the 25% he actually paid. That would have lowered his tax rate to below that for people who earn less than $100,000, according to the New York Times. It would also have saved him about $31 million. You can debate the numbers because the tax rules generate them according to the structure in place in 2005, not the structure that would be in place if the AMT were abolished, which might change how Trump’s income and taxes would be calculated. Despite that, the numbers do give a rough guide to how much Trump would personally save if his AMT proposal were enacted. The intent of the AMT is to ensure that wealthy and self-employed Americans pay tax rates that are comparable to those paid by ordinary workers on a salary or a simple wage. The AMT was introduced in 1970 to solve the problem of wealthy people paying lower tax rates that those poorer than them. The US tax code contains many provisions allowing wealthy and self-employed people to take “deductions” — business expenses they paid throughout the year — against the taxes they owe. These deductions often lead to a situation in which a wealthy person with multiple streams of income might pay a lower tax rate, or even less tax overall, than someone on an average annual wage. The intent of the AMT is that if your income is above a certain level ($109,475 in 2005) you pay a flat minimum tax rate regardless of the deductions you’re trying to write off.Trump’s proposal to abolish the AMT would replace it with a simpler set of bands in which the very rich pay a top tax rate of 25%. Trump’s campaign said many deductions would be abolished to pay for it:“Reducing or eliminating most deductions and loopholes available to the very rich.”But the rich would keep some valuable (but unspecified) deductions:“Those within the 25% bracket will keep fewer deductions. Charitable giving and mortgage interest deductions will remain unchanged for all taxpayers.” Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)RelatedTrump pulls U.S. out of Pacific trade deal, loosening Asia tiesJanuary 24, 2017In “World”Trump: Obamacare key provisions to remainNovember 12, 2016In “latest news”Trump to hit Mexico with tariffs in anti-immigration measureMay 31, 2019In “latest news”
With the release of Battlefield 3 $5.99 at Amazon , DICE introduced its new Frostbite 2 game engine and brought the series bang up-to-date with its modern day setting. With Battlefield 2 getting its final new release in 2006, gamers wouldn’t be that surprised to wait a few more years for Battlefield 4 to arrive. That’s not the case, however, and you will be able to play the new game next year.Battlefield 4 was announced in July without any real detail being divulged. However, with the Game Developer Conference in Europe running this week, DICE has decided to release some small slither of new details. It has been confirmed that Battlefield 4 will take place in the same modern day setting as BF3, and it will not take 6 years to get it ready to ship. Karl Magnus Troedsson, general manager at DICE, stated that they expect a much quicker turnaround mainly because gamers want more Battlefield as soon as possible. They also aren’t developing another new engine for BF4 to use, which saves years on development time. The decision to stick with a modern day setting is because DICE believe they can do a lot more with it, and this could be where the series stays for a number of releases. I doubt many will complain about that.DICE must also be looking at the success Activision has had with the Call of Duty series, which manages a release a new title each year and sells millions with every iteration. DICE and EA clearly both want the same from the Battlefield series, even if they don’t deliver every 12 months. If you’re a Battlefield fan, then the good news is you will be able to play Battlefield 4 next year. However, EA will be forcing you to purchase another game in order to gain access. The beta will be limited to gamers who pre-order and purchase the Medal of Honor Warfighter Limited Edition, which launches on October 23.The most surprising thing about that limited beta access is it doesn’t seem to include gamers who signed up to the Battlefield Premium service. Surely they need some beta love, too?For the time being it seems Battlefield: Bad Company games have taken a backseat, but Troedsson said we shouldn’t rule out another Bad Company game appearing at some point in the future. For now the focus is on the main series, though.Read more at Joystiq

The ministry says symptoms can follow a virus that also causes the common cold, and as a result deems it as highly contagious.Symptoms include, eyes turning pink or red, weeping or oozing a gooey liquid, experience itching and burning, and eyes stuck shut when you first wake up. The advisory says these symptoms can last for several days. However, the ministry says treatment can differ, depending on the cause of contraction. It warns that antibiotics will not help. While you can use warm or cool compresses, to relieve the pain and irritation in the eyes, the ministry says most cases of pink eye go away on its own without treatment, but it is best to see a primary care physician if symptoms are being experienced, to ensure it is treated properly.Meanwhile the ministry has issued some hygienic guidelines to minimize transmission, advising persons with the virus to avoid sharing bed sheets and pillows, towels, tissues and handkerchiefs including cosmetics with unaffected family and friends. It also asks persons to practice hand washing with water and plain soap, and rubbed together for 15 to 30 seconds, while children should be made to wash their hands before and after eating and after touching the eyes, coughing, or sneezing. The ministry says alcohol-based hand rubs or hand sanitizers are a good alternative for disinfecting hands if a sink is not available. And finally, the ministry says persons with viral conjunctivitis must remain home from school and work to avoid spreading the virus to others.#MagneticMediaNews#TCIPinkEyeOutbreak Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsApp

19 States And DC Sue Administration Over Plan To Detain… Rich Pedroncelli by NPR News Richard Gonzales 8.26.19 6:57pm Nineteen states and the District of Columbia are suing the Trump administration over its plan to pull out of a decades-old court settlement that governs the care of migrant children in federal detention. The federal government has abided by a court agreement known as the Flores settlement since 1997. It says migrant children should be detained in the least restrictive setting possible and only for about 20 days. Last week the Trump administration announced it will soon detain children with their families indefinitely. The states, led by California and Massachusetts, argue that the government is already failing to provide detained children with safe and sanitary conditions. (Earlier this month the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that detained children should receive adequate food, clean water and basic hygiene.) Their suit also says the government plan will have a negative long-term impact on the detained children if they are held indefinitely.”This new Trump rule callously puts at risk the safety and well-being of children,” said California Attorney General Xavier Becerra in a statement. “No child deserves to be left in conditions inappropriate and harmful for their age. We’re taking the Trump Administration to court to protect children from the irreparable harm caused by unlawful and unnecessary detention.”The states also say the administration’s plan will result in an expansion of family detention centers that are not licensed by the states. The administration says it will set its own standards for care — in effect, licensing itself.”With this rule, the Trump Administration is paving the way for [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] to imprison innocent children for indefinite periods of time and is attempting to take away the ability of states to stop them,” said Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey.Becerra and Healey are Democrats. The Justice Department has not yet responded for a request for comment.Copyright 2019 NPR. Tell us about your journey. I have grown up in a family of music and the arts in general. My grandfather was a composer, professor and played a variety of musical instruments including clarinet and piano. I credit my initial musical interest and development to him, as he was the first one to teach me how to play the clarinet and piano in the western classical style. My family and I devotees of Mata Amritanandamayi, also known as the ‘Amma’. I have grown up playing bhajans at her programs and that was my first introduction to Indian music. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Also, in high school I discovered the Remember Shakti recordings and I was obsessed with all the musicians in the group. I used to listen to the songs over and over again, and play along with the music. That’s when I realized how much I really loved Indian music. I remember making a resolution then that I would study with Hariprasadji, and that’s what exactly what I did after college. He has taught me everything I know about Hindustani music. I had to drastically change my instrument to play the Indian classical gamaks and harkats, as the clarinet cannot naturally bend pitches that easily. I worked on it for months to get it just right. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixWhat inspires you to create music, who are your idols? All the Shakti musicians: Hariprasad Chaurasia, Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, John McLaughlin. Apart from that, I love AR Rahman, Coldplay, Radiohead, Foster the People, Bon Iver, Kanye West…the list goes on.Tell us about your first break and how the journey has been sinceThe very first video that really started getting attention was Nee Nenaindal with Vidya & Vandana Iyer. We recorded it in Vidya’s dorm room for fun, spontaneously. I haven’t looked back since! Some memorable moments for you?Ah this is a tough one. I have so many! I think my favourite one right now is getting the call from Shankar Mahadevan and him asking me to collaborate! Almost surreal, and such a dream come true. What songs top your playlist?I really like Miguel’s new album. I like the production style and vibe on that album a lot. I’ve been listening to Raghu Dixit’s new album, Jag Changa, really killer stuff. What suggestions would you have for newbies who want to make it big?I’m a bit of a newbie myself! I think what I’ve realized is that it’s important to do music you love. Even if it is contrary to what the popular taste is. There is always an audience for genuine music and soul. And that can only come if you do music that inspires you. What next for you?I’m currently working on an album with very exciting collaborations. It’s all my original compositions and I can’t wait to share it with everyone! What is on the cards for the Storm Festival?I’m working with an excellent set of musicians! It’s going to be a mix of some of my original compositions from my channel, plus some of Shankar Mahadevan’s big hits. Basically, it’s going to be a big, fun jam session. How do you think music festivals will change the way the country perceives music?I think music festivals are great, because they encourage up and coming talent as well as nurture the already established artists. I think it’s a great way for musicians who are just coming into the scene to showcase their work and gain exposure. It broadens the mind and taste of the listener, as there are so many artists from different genres and styles at festivals.
Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals 3 min read Lego announced a new building set at CES, with a focus on introducing young children to the basics of programming. Lego Boost combines building blocks with sensors, motors and app control to let kids build a variety of robots that can respond to stimulii. The Boost kit is controlled by the Move Hub, a special Lego brick with a tilt sensor and a selection of connections for the included motors and visual/color sensor. The Move hub communicates with a smartphone or tablet running the Boost app, which determines how the hub and its connected devices behave. The kit and app provide instructions for building five different robotics projects, including a Short Circuit-like robot, a cat, a vehicle, a guitar and even a 3D printer.Learn to codeThe robot, cat and vehicle all seem like fairly standard projects for electronic building block kits like Boost, and versions have been seen in Lego’s more complex Mindstorms robotics kits. The guitar shows off unique potential with the visual/color sensor, responding to colored bricks on the fret to signal the connected mobile device to produce different tones. The 3D printer is even more unique, assembling its own Lego creations using a simple conveyor belt and hopper assembly.Boost creations are programmed using a variety of interconnecting blocks in the Boost app. The system is similar to Lego Mindstorms programming, but with a simpler interface targeting younger users. It still provides logic functions for use with input from the kit’s sensors and output from the motors and the connected mobile device’s speaker. Users can code their own robots to work any way they want in Creative Canvas mode, providing access to the programming tools outside of the five premade projects.Mindstorms’s little brotherBoost is not a replacement for Lego Mindstorms, which has been the company’s flagship robotics platform for several years. The Move Hub is solely a transmitter and receiver device, offloading all programming and processing to the connected tablet and app.Instead of running code itself, it simply sends input out over the app and triggers its motors when the app tells it to. The Mindstorms EV3 Brick is a programmable microcomputer on its own, able to retain and execute code directly without a connected device. Mindstorms is a more expensive and more powerful system, with more sensor and motor modules, and Lego has stated it will remain part of the company’s offerings alongside Boost.I saw Lego Boost in action, and it has a lot of potential as a robotics kit in the same vein as Mindstorms. The robotics components in Boost show some engineering advancements that could also help produce a new fourth generation of Mindstorms. The Move Hub and motor and sensor modules are smaller than the Mindstorms equivalents, and while the Move Hub doesn’t have its own processor for directly running code, it’s still an advanced wireless receiver and transmitter with sensors and connections for motors, which means the next Mindstorms processing brick could be much smaller than the chunky one used with Mindstorms EV3. Lego hasn’t announced specific plans for any upgraded Mindstorms sets, but Boost hints at some welcome changes.Lego plans to ship Boost in the second half of 2017, with a $159.99 retail price. The kit includes the Move Hub, a distance/color sensor, a motor and 843 Lego bricks. New Valley school lets students pick career-path academies MILAN (AP) — Italian President Sergio Mattarella, former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and a handful of agriculture ministers on Friday gave a boost to the U.N. goal of eliminating world hunger by 2030 by signing the so-called Milan Charter. The Italian government intends the charter to be the legacy of the six-month Milan Expo 2015 world’s fair and will present it to the U.N. secretary general in October just before the world’s fair closes. Mattarella said the charter has “great ethical and political value” by indicating crucial goals and asking for “tough changes” in behavior and regulation. The agriculture ministers of Angola, Argentina and Iran, who attended a two-day meeting on the charter’s themes, were among those who signed the document. While the charter does not have the force of an international protocol, the Italian government is still seeking signatures from agriculture ministers to create commitments among those with policy responsibility. More than 200,000 people have signed the document, which seeks action toward reducing food waste, ensuring farmers get their share of agricultural profits and safeguarding farmland, among other things. It has been criticized for not addressing the causes of hunger or such debated technologies as genetically modified crops.Ertharin Cousin, executive director of the World Food Program who addressed the agriculture ministers, said the charter seeks the same goal of combatting world hunger as the U.N. sustainable development goals that will be decided later this year.Cousin said the document is important because “it represents the voice of the people,” emphasizing it will take collective efforts of all sectors of society, public and private, to combat hunger.Copyright © The Associated Press. One Championship plans 80 shows, big roster expansion in ’20 AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email by Greg Beacham, The Associated Press Posted Jun 19, 2019 3:14 pm PDT One Championship plans to stage about 80 martial arts shows in 2020, and the MMA promotion will roughly double its roster of fighters to do it.One CEO Chatri Sityodtong revealed his latest plans for ambitious expansion to The Associated Press on Wednesday. The promotion is putting on 45 events this year in Asia, but will sharply increase its schedule next year. One also will continue to keep its fights freely available to much of the world in response to what Sityodtong describes as a global desire from its broadcasters for more fighting content. One will still focus on its core Asian markets, but Sityodtong also is in discussions with broadcast partner Turner Sports to stage its first U.S. show next year.“Definitely a very tough task, but I think it’s very doable, knock on wood,” Sityodtong said of his extraordinary expansion plans. “We’re on this rocket ship, and I’ve just got to hold on.”By comparison, the UFC has 43 events currently on its 2019 schedule. One’s expansion comes while the UFC is making a push into Asia, including the opening a $13 million performance institute in Shanghai to develop Chinese athletes.Unlike the UFC, One Championship includes fights in several martial arts disciplines on its cards. One’s shows in 2020 will feature a mix of competitions, but its primary focus is still mixed martial arts — and a whole lot more of it.“The market can’t get enough,” Sityodtong said, citing his company’s rising viewership figures on broadcast and digital channels. “Our fans can’t get enough of our content, so we’re trying to satiate demand, but every time we put out more content, things just go more viral. A lot of the free-to-air TV broadcasters, the digital broadcasters, they’re all demanding more and more content from us, so we have to provide more and more content to the world.”One reached a three-year broadcast deal with Turner last year, and is broadcast around the world on over-the-air television channels. Sityodtong sees an opportunity to increase his company’s prominence in the U.S., where the UFC has put much of its fight content on ESPN Plus this year in its lucrative new deal.Sityodtong describes the UFC as One’s “archrivals,” although the UFC might not see it that way. But where the UFC sees value in exclusivity on ESPN, Sityodtong wants his fights available “everywhere and anywhere at all times.”“(The UFC’s) approach right now is they’re behind a double paywall on ESPN Plus, which limits their reach,” Sityodtong added. “That partnership is great for both companies and also great for the sport. That being said, it’s a very different strategy from what One Championship is doing. We are focused on maximum distribution, maximum reach, frequency and engagement, and making our product accessible to the entire world. That’s just a philosophical difference.”Filling out One’s ambitious new schedule will require more fighters, more staff and more events in the promotion’s core markets such as Singapore, Jakarta, Beijing, Bangkok and various venues in the Philippines. Sityodtong expects to stage four fight cards per year in those main markets, but his ambition remains global — and the Harvard Business School graduate wants to plant a flag in North America.Sityodtong hasn’t revealed a time and place for One’s first U.S. show, but the company is opening offices in Los Angeles and New York this summer. The Singapore-based One already has a corporate presence across Asia from Tokyo to Bangalore, India. One has signed American fighters Demetrious Johnson, Eddie Alvarez and Sage Northcutt in recent months. Sityodtong is eager to land other non-Asian free agent veterans, but One will stay focused on finding its core talent across Asia.“We look for athletes that we can appreciate and admire for their mastery of martial arts, but also admire their life stories and their values,” Sityodtong said. “That’s very important, and I think that’s the biggest differentiating factor for One Championship versus our global competitor in the West.”___More AP sports: https://apnews.com/tag/apf-sports and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsGreg Beacham, The Associated Press
There will be a new effort to resume talks for a settlement of the Cyprus problem after next year’s presidential election, President Nicos Anastasiades said on Tuesday.Speaking on the sidelines of an event at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics, Anastasiades said several international agents have expressed the wish for the talks to resume.“I know there are many international stakeholders, including the [United Nations] Secretary-General who have expressed the desire to re-engage in order to contribute to restarting the dialogue,” he said.“I hear certain remarks by [Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa] Akinci, from which I foresee – and that is my belief, too – that after the election there will be a new initiative.”Asked to comment on Akinci’s indignant statement that the UN chief was wrong to blame both sides – Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots – equally following the collapse of the latest round of talks at Crans-Montana, Switzerland, last July, Anastasiades repeated his claim that the collapse was owed to Turkey’s refusal to compromise.“[Akinci] was right in his assessment because the blame was not placed squarely on Turkey and the Turkish side,” he said.A similar sense that developments may come following elections in the republic, as well as the Turkish-held part of Cyprus was voiced by foreign minister Ioannis Kasoulides from Athens.Turkey, the minister said, is ready to discuss security issues post-solution in Cyprus after the presidential elections in the republic and ‘parliamentary’ elections in the breakaway Turkish Cypriot north, both scheduled for January 2018.He was speaking after a meeting with his Greek counterpart Nicos Kotzias who briefed him about a recent visit with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu.“They said (Turkey) they are ready to discuss the security issues with Greece,” Kasoulides said. “It is what (Greek Prime Minister Alexis) Mr. Tsipras wanted before Crans Montana and it never happened then, which would have helped a lot.”The minister clarified that Ankara meant after the elections on the island. The latest round of reunification talks at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana took place between June 28 and July 6 but again ended in deadlock over disagreements on security and guarantees.
